"Ireland's future - Chicago or Copenhagen" - David Begg to deliver lecture at UCC, 27 February

"Ireland's future - Chicago or Copenhagen" is the title of the 7th Philip Monahan Memorial Lecture  to be delivered at UCC on Monday, 27 February by David Begg, General Secretary, Irish Congress of Trade Unions.  Mr Begg, in his lecture, will allude to Ireland's current phase of economic development and discuss the direction it needs to take in the future.  He will argue in favour of the Nordic model rather than 'Boston or Berlin'.

The Philip Monahan Memorial Lecture is held annually in memory of Philip Monahan who served both as a Commissioner and Cork City Manager for 34 years.  He was the most important influence in defining the system of local democracy in the Republic.  Born in Dublin in 1894, he was elected to Louth County Council and Drogheda Borough Corporation in 1920.  He was appointed Commissioner in Cork on 1 November1924 when Cork Corporation was dissolved. He was the first local government manager and set the style of probity and enterprise that has since marked that office.  Previous guest speakers include: President Mary McAleese, John Hume, Robert Putnam, and Francesco Rutelli, Mayor of Rome

The lecture takes place on Monday, 27 February 2006, 3.30-5.30pm, Lecture Theatre G01, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, College Road, Cork. Members of the public are invited to attend and admission is free.
