UCC's Law Faculty presents Seminar on Human Rights for Lawyers, 3 February

UCC's Faculty of Law will host a seminar titled "The European Convention on Human Rights and Irish Law: Practitioners' Perspectives" on Friday next, 3 February. The seminar is aimed at lawyers exploring the practical perspectives of human rights law in the courts.  Building on the Faculty's successful programme of seminars for the continuing professional development of barristers and solicitors, the event will host two of the most eminent practitioners in the field: the UK's leading human rights barrister, Lord Anthony Lester of Herne Hill, Q.C., now adjunct Professor of Law at UCC, and solicitor Michael Farrell who continues to be at the forefront of human rights developments in Ireland.

The seminar will focus on the lessons to be learned from these experienced practitioners who, between them, have argued human rights successfully in the Irish, British and European courts. It will attempt to tease out some of the practical challenges involved in this broad-ranging area of law through contributions by both eminent speakers and by the chair, Dr Ursula Kilkelly of the Faculty of Law.  It will consider areas such as family and child law, criminal law and immigration law and highlight possible challenges under the European Convention on Human Rights Act 2003. Overall, the seminar will promote the use of the ECHR in the courts and raise awareness about its potential in relevant cases.

The seminar takes place on Friday, 3 February, 5.00-7.30pm, Aula Maxima, UCC.
