Presentation of UCC Sports Scholarships 2005/06

UCC will honour its sporting achievements at a presentation of awards to its students and clubs today (31 January 2006).  Professor Gerard T. Wrixon, President, UCC will present 75 students with Sports Scholarships ranging from €500 to €2,000 for the current academic year.

Amongst those being honoured are Tom Kenny (Hurling), Ross Noonan (Rugby), Brendan O'Connell (Soccer), Sarah O'Donovan (Camogie) and John Hayes (Gaelic Football).

The Scholarship Scheme has been revised with three categories now in place. The Presentation takes place in conjunction with the launch of the BEd in Sports Studies Course, as well as, the launch of a kit/gear supplier to all UCC Sports Clubs - Kukri Sports.  Kukri Sports will be the main supplier of Sports and Leisurewear for UCC Sports Clubs for the next three years.  Acting Director of Physical Education & Sport, Christine O'Donovan said this initiative will give the University Clubs a clear identity whilst representing their Alma Mater.  It also coincides with the Department's venture into merchandising the Skull & Crossbones on leisurewear.

This year sees 19 different sports being recognised through the Scholarship Scheme.  Gymnastics, Trampolining and Badminton are being honoured for the first time along with Rugby, Soccer, GAA, Basketball, Rowing, Hockey, Sailing, Golf, Tennis, Athletics, Ladies Gaelic Football, Camogie and Handball.

In addition to these Scholarships, six students will receive Munster Council GAA Bursaries. Richie Foley, Paul O'Connor, Sarah O'Donovan, Tadhg Óg Murphy, Kieran Connery and Laura Power will be presented with cheques from the Munster Council.  The University is indebted to the Cork County Board and the Munster Council of the GAA for their continued support in the development of Gaelic Games in the University.

Organised by UCC's Department of Physical Education & Sport, the Presentation of Scholarships and Munster GAA Bursaries takes place today (31 January 2006) at 6pm in the Multifunctional Hall, Aras na Mac Leinn, UCC.
