The University and the City - UCC Lecture, 2 December
Professor John A. Murphy will deliver a lecture at UCC Friday, 2
December titled 'Town & Gown - the Changing Relationship'. As
Cork 2005 draws to a close, John A. Murphy will reflect on the
relationship between the University and the City. The public lecture
follows the AGM of Convocation, the statutory graduates body of the
National University of Ireland (NUI). Both the AGM and the public
lecture will be chaired by Dr Garret FitzGerald, Chancellor of the NUI.
John A. Murphy was Professor of Irish History at UCC from 1971 to 1990,
an independent member of Seanad Éireann, a member both of the Governing
Body of UCC and the NUI Senate, a media commentator, and a Visiting
Professor at several American universities.
Convocation is the statutory graduate representative body of all NUI
universities and recognized colleges. All NUI graduates (including
honorary graduates) are automatically members of Convocation. Nearing
its centenary, the National University of Ireland was established by
Charter in 1908. Convocation is one of the statutory authorities of the
NUI together with the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, the
Pro-Vice-Chancellors and the NUI Senate.
The public lecture takes place on Friday, 2 December at 7pm in the Aula
Maxima, UCC. Members of the public are invited to attend and
admission is free.
