President Mary McAleese to launch Anthology of Children's Work at Cork City School
President Mary McAleese will visit St. Vincent's Primary School in Cork
City today (Tuesday, 29 November 2005) to launch "Connections" - an
anthology of children's work to celebrate Cork's culture as part of
UCC's Bridging the Gap Project. "Connections" features stories, poems
and pictures produced by pupils from schools in Cork City which
participate in 'Bridging the Gap' Project - a UCC run project aimed at
enhancing the educational experience of young people in Cork City.
Over 100 pieces by children and young people aged from four to 17
feature in 'Connections'. The written work is presented in four
parts. 'City of Cultures' shows how Cork city is making
connections between different cultures. In 'Happy Days', children
connect with their life experiences and describe some of their fun
times. The stories and pictures in 'My Special Place' connect
people with their own place. In the final part of the book,
'Reflections', the young writers explore the connections that link them
with other people and with their environment. According to its editor,
Cynthia Deane "The high quality of the creative work is a great tribute
to the talent of the children, encouraged by their families. It
is also a result of the excellent teaching in the schools, where
principals and classroom teachers have high expectations and promote
high achievement for all pupils."
All the young artists and authors whose work is published in
"Connections" are making connections - with their city and its many
cultures, with their families and friends, and with the happy
experiences enjoyed in their vibrant and confident city communities.
Matthew O'Callaghan of Deerpark CBS introduces his story "Life can
often be about making little connections. Connections between people
and between people and places."
In addition to the launch the President will see a mini showcasing of
the project's activities in the areas of art, drama, music, pair
reading and professional development for teaching staff.
UCC's Bridging the Gap project is directed by Professor Áine Hyland,
Professor of Education and Vice President of UCC, and is managed by Dr
Tracey Connolly, Department of Education, UCC. The anthology was edited
by Cynthia Deane who is the project's internal evaluator.
The launch takes place on Tuesday, 29 November at 12 noon in St Vincent's Primary School, St Mary's Road, Cork City.
