Esat BT Donates euro10,000 to World Class Research Centre at University College Cork (UCC)

Esat BT has announced a donation of euro10,000 to the Education and Outreach Programme of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) at University College Cork (UCC). The donation will support the APC's world class research centre which examines the means by which intestinal bacteria influence health and diseases such as Crohn's disease, colitis, and colon cancer.

Education and Outreach to industry and society forms a fundamental cornerstone of the APC's activities. The Programme actively promotes communication with government, Irish and international industry, the public and in particular schools, on issues relating to gastrointestinal disorders, probiotics and functional foods as well as keeping the public aware of new therapeutic agents, ongoing clinical trials and exciting new research findings.

Welcoming Esat BT's support, Dr. Jean Van Sinderen-Law, Director of Development at UCC said, ?"Commitments of support from the corporate sector are of paramount importance in reinforcing the message that being a knowledge based society is fundamental to the future of Ireland. Partnership support is critical for the programme to develop and reach its full potential as it explores opportunities for commercial exploitation of research findings by both the food and pharmaceutical sectors."

Bill Murphy, CEO, Esat BT added, "Through our sponsorship of the Esat BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition we put a strong emphasis on the advancement of science and engineering in Ireland. Our support for the APC reflects a profound belief by Esat BT in supporting education in Ireland. This area of research undertaken in the APC represents an emerging field of science and is a niche area in which Ireland can excel. We have been impressed by the achievements to date and are excited by the prospect of the role it will play in educating Irish society in the future."
