Internationally Renowned Director to lecture at University College Cork (UCC)



As Cork takes centre-stage on the cultural map of Europe in 2005, students of language and theatre will have the opportunity to hear from Spain's most avant-garde stage director, Mr Calixto Bieito and one of Ireland's leading translators of Spanish theatre, Professor David Johnston at a colloquium at UCC on 18 February next.

Entitled: Spanish Theatre in Translation: Modern Voices, Modern Versions, Classic Texts and hosted by UCC's Department of Hispanic Studies, the Colloquium will commence at 2pm with the Keynote Address "The voice transformed: The Director's Expression" by internationally-acclaimed Director, Mr Calixto Bieito. Mr Bieito who has been honoured with several awards is at present Artistic Director, Teatre Romea, Barcelona. Director of Calderón de la Barca's, Life's a Dream, Valle-Inclán's Barbaric Comedies and works by Shakespeare in Catalan, future projects will see him visit some of the most prestigious theatres and opera houses in Europe.

This will be followed by a Presentation "The voice echoed: The Translator's Articulation "by Professor David Johnston, Head of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, Queens University Belfast, and Translator of García Lorca, and recently Lope de Vega's The Dog in the Manger (El perro del hortelano) for the Royal Shakespeare Company, England.

The Colloquium will close with a Round-Table Discussion "Contemporary performance of Spanish theatre for English-speaking audiences - Voices lost?"chaired by Dr Paul McDermid, Department of Hispanic Studies, University College Cork.

The Colloquium takes place on Friday, 18 February, 2-4pm in The River Room, The Glucksman Gallery, UCC. Admission is free and all are welcome.
