UCC's Medical School Honours its Students at Annual Prize-giving Ceremony
UCC's School of Medicine recently held their annual Prize-Giving
Ceremony which this year was held for the first time in the new,
state-of-the-art, purpose built, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex. A
total of 14 prizes were presented for distinction in a wide range of
subject areas including Paediatrics, Anatomy, Surgery, Physiology and
Pathology. An indication of the excellence in teaching and
calibre of the students was the fact that many had also been awarded
NUI Scholarships demonstrating their excellence at national level.
The Head of the School, Professor Eamonn Quigley welcomed the
prizewinners, friends, family members and School of Medicine staff to
the Ceremony. "This important event in the Medical School calendar is
an excellent opportunity to recognize the impressive achievements of
our students", said Professor Quigley.
Much of the academic teaching now takes place in the Brookfield Health
Sciences Complex which includes facilities such as an IT Laboratory, a
Clinical Skills Laboratory (including mock wards) and Communication
Skills Rooms complete with audio-visual recording equipment. A
distinctive feature of medical education in UCC is small group,
patient-centred teaching, where students learn the skills of listening
and communicating, history taking and clinical examination under the
watchful eye of highly qualified clinical lecturers.
