"Days of St Petersburg" at UCC and Cork city, 8-11 November




As part of the celebrations surrounding Cork's status as the European Capital of Culture 2005, and with the aim of nurturing closer ties between the cities of Cork and St Petersburg, a series of cultural and other events has been organised from 8-11 November, to be held at UCC and Cork city.

Organised by UCC's Departments of Electrical Engineering, History and Music, in conjunction with Cork City Council and St Petersburg City Council, the week kicks off on Tuesday, 8 November at 4pm with a performance of Russian sacred music by the chamber choir 'Rozhdestvo' ('Christmas') at the Honan Chapel followed at 6pm (Kane Building, G19, UCC)  with a lecture on Yeats, the Celtic Revival and the Russian Silver Age by Andrey Mashinyan, Head of the Irish Culture Centre of St Petersburg Stage University.

A Performance of the chamber choir 'Rozhdestvo' takes place on Wednesday, 9 November in St. Finbarre`s Cathedral at 1pm followed by the opening of the exhibition 'Views of St. Petersburg in the lithographs of the first half of the 19th century' from the collection of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, (6pm, Foyer, Department of Electrical Engineering, UCC).  An electronic presentation of  'Virtual stroll along St. Petersburg' concludes the day's events at 8pm in the Glucksman Gallery.

The events of the week end on Thursday, 10 November with a performance of the chamber choir 'Rozhdestvo' at 1pm in English Market.  Later that evening at 8pm a lecture on 'James Joyce in St. Petersburg' by Tatiana Ponomareva, Director of the Nabokov Museum can be heard in Boole I Lecture Theatre, UCC.
