University College Cork (UCC) hosts International Conference on Mental Health



Dignity - A Step to Recovery in Mental Illness is the title of an international conference to be held at UCC on Friday next, 11 February. Organised by Cork Advocacy Network (CAN) with UCC's Department of Applied Social Studies, the Conference will be chaired by Dr Tony Bates, Principal Clinical Psychologist, Expert Group on Mental Health, Department of Health.

Guest speakers include Dr John Owens, Chairperson of the Mental Health Commission who will speak on "Advocacy in context of today's Health Strategy". Diarmuid Ring, User Representative on the Mental Health Commission will continue the morning session with a talk entitled "An Irish User's Perspective" followed by the PRO of Cork Advocacy Network & User Advocate, John McCarthy who will speak on "Too late for Michael". Junior Minister for Health & Children, Tim O'Malley, TD will close the morning session with a talk entitled "Portfolio for Mental Health".

Dr Tony Bates will introduce the afternoon session with a talk entitled "The Recovery Model". The Director of Mindfreedom International USA, David Oaks will speak on "The International Psychiatric Survivors' Movement: Unite to win a non-violent revolution of human rights & alternatives in mental health". This will be followed by a talk "Making sense of inner voices" by Mannelore Klafki, Chairperson, Hearing Voices Network and Member of European Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry (ENUSP) Germany. The afternoon session will close with a talk "Letter to my friend who is giving up" by guest speaker Rowland Urey, Manager Oldham User Forum and ENUSP member, England.

The Conference takes place on Friday, 11 February, 9.30am-4.30pm, Student Centre, University College Cork (registration 9am). Admission is free and all are welcome.
