UCC Conference Examines Innovative Approaches to the Needs of Rural Areas

The role of rural development agencies in stimulating innovative approaches to enterprise development in rural areas is the focus for discussion at a conference to be held in University College Cork (UCC) on Saturday next, 29 January.

The conference entitled 'Rural Enterprise Development & Sustainability' will examine three key areas of research funded by the Department of Agriculture & Food under the Research Stimulus Fund and conducted by the Department of Food Business & Development, UCC; Department of Economics, NUIG; Western Development Commission & West Cork Leader Co-operative.

The objectives of the research were:

  • To identify the key opportunities for sustainable rural enterprise
  • To analyse in detail specific innovative models and approaches at sub-sectoral level which promote sustainability and competitiveness
  • To contribute to development of best practice by local development agencies in the area of rural enterprise development.
Conference organiser, Helena O'Connor said "with the current trend in farming and rural decline, this conference should provide a platform for discussion on alternative agri-incomes for rural communities."

The conference takes place on Saturday next, 29 January, Boole II Lecture Theatre, University College Cork.
