Documenting Irish Feminisms: The Second Wave

A history and analysis of Irish feminism from the 1960s to the 1990s is the subject of Documenting Irish Feminisms: The Second Wave by UCC Lecturer Dr Linda Connolly and Dr Tina O'Toole. Published by The Woodfield Press, the book maps the changes that have occurred in Irish women's lives focusing in particular on the role of feminist politics and the women's movement and contains numerous original documents and photographs documenting the history of feminist activism in the period.

This documentary history and analysis originated in a research project entitled The Irish Women's Movement, which was established in the Sociology Department at University College Cork in 1999 (see www.ucc.ie/wisp/iwm/). The project formed one major strand of an integrated research initiative in the Arts and Humanities in the University that was funded by the Government of Ireland's first Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI 1).

Topics covered include:

  • contraception, abortion and reproductive rights;
  • the intersection of feminist activism in Ireland with the State;
  • the legal system, family law and social policy;
  • feminism in Northern Ireland;
  • the role of lesbian feminists in the Irish women's movement and the wider question of sexualities in Ireland;
  • working class and rural women in the Irish feminist debate;
  • the growth and impact of feminism in Irish education;
  • fascinating case studies, documents and photographs.
Documenting Irish Feminisms: The Second Wave will be launched on Thursday, 3 February in the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, College Green, Dublin.
