Local Secondary Schools embark on a voyage of discovery at UCC Boole Informatics Invitational

Pupils and teachers from local secondary schools will have the opportunity to experience some of the exciting advances that have been made in informatics, at the interface between mathematics and computer science, at UCC on Friday next, 21 January when The Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI) and the Department of Computer Science will host the Annual Boole Informatics Invitational (BII).

The BII is an annual event where a selection of high achieving 5th and 6th year students and their teachers from the Cork area are invited to visit UCC.  The purpose of the invitational is to raise the awareness in the Cork secondary schools of the excitement in the field by exposing teachers and students to leading edge researchers, software, and hardware.

This year, special guest, Martin Orr, the gold medal winner at the 2004 International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI), Silver ('03) and Bronze ('02) will discuss his "IOI experience".  The participants will hear from world class scientists Professor Gregory Provan, Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Dr John Morrison, and Computer Science PhD student Brian Clayton.

Attendees will also get to see the BCRI's supercomputer "up close and personal" during a tour of the computer itself.

Speakers and a selection of academic staff will be on hand to talk with the attendees. This year 12 teachers and 35 students from 12 secondary schools in Cork will attend.
