Head of UCC's School of Medicine elected President of the World Gastroenterology Organisation



Professor Eamonn Quigley, Head, School of Medicine, UCC has been elected President of the World  Gastroenterology Organisation  (WGO-OMGE)  -  the  world's  largest  and  most  prominent  professional gastroenterological association.  Professor Quigley was elected President at the World Congress of Gastroenterology in Montreal, Canada.   Speaking at his inauguration, Professor Quigley said "It is with great pleasure and with a sense of even greater responsibility that I assume the  Presidency of WGO-OMGE; this is a singular honour and it is my goal to serve all the  members to the best of my ability over the next four years. That the WGO-OMGE has  achieved the status it now enjoys in global gastroenterology is a testament to all of those who  have preceded me and  who, often in adverse  circumstances have created, sustained  and  nurtured the organisation. We have come a long way but there are many challenges and  opportunities  ahead.  Together we can  make it happen."

A native of Ballineen, Co. Cork, Professor Quigley received his medical education at UCC graduating with an MBBChBAO in 1976 and an MD from The National University of Ireland in 1984. He has published over 400 articles, including original manuscripts, editorials, review articles, book chapters and case reports. He was awarded a Fogarty International  Fellowship by the National Institutes of Health and an Ainsworth Travelling Scholarship from UCC.  Professor Quigley completed high medical training in gastroenterology and internal medicine as a Senior Registrar and Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Hope Hospital  and the University of Manchester.

The World Gastroenterology Organisation which was founded in 1954 is comprised of a federation of 98 national and regional gastroenterology societies and associations representing  over  50,000  gastroenterologists  worldwide.  Its mission is to contribute to the study and progress of gastroenterology on a global scale, to  contribute actively to training and education in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal diseases  and provide a vital worldwide link for physicians treating digestive diseases.  WGO-OMGE  initiatives  include  Training  Centers  around  the  world  (Thailand,  Egypt,  Pakistan,  Morocco,  South  Africa,  Bolivia,  and  Chile),  Train-the-Trainer  programmes  for  physicians, an Outreach Programme which brings  endoscopic services  and equipment to  developing  countries,  the  International  Digestive  Cancer  Alliance  and  Global  Guidelines  Library among others.
