University College Cork (UCC) opens office in Beijing

UCC is one of the top destinations in Ireland for Chinese students. Links have now been further developed with the opening of an UCC office in Beijing - the first time that UCC has opened an office overseas. Over the last three years, UCC has been engaged in an active student recruitment campaign in China. 105 Chinese students studied in UCC in 2004/2005 and that number is set to increase to approximately 150 in the coming year.

UCC has become well-known in China as a centre for educational excellence attracting more and more Chinese students.  The selection of UCC as The Sunday Times Irish University of the Year for the second time in three years has further sealed its reputation as an institution of quality. Cork and Shanghai are twinned and close working relations with partners in Shanghai and the southern region of China already exist with students from Shanghai among the largest group studying at UCC. The opening of a dedicated office in Beijing is designed to strengthen UCC's representation in Northern China.

According to Louise Tobin, UCC's International Education Officer, "The opening of the office marks a turning point in UCC's relations with China. The office will provide information for prospective students and their parents about UCC" said Ms Tobin.   "It will also serve as a central contact point for developing UCC's relationships with prestigious Chinese universitities", she added. UCC has already several institutional relationships with Chinese universities which are being advanced via UCC's International Education Office in cooperation with faculties.  Institutional partners include the following:

  • Northeastern Agricultural University, Harbin
  • Nanjing Normal University
  • Shanghai Fisheries University
  • East China Normal University, Shanghai
  • Southeast University, Nanjing
  • Tsinghua University, Beijing
Institutional relationships with Ningbo University, Guilin University of Electronic Technology and Peking University are currently being advanced.

The official opening of the UCC office took place on Friday, 14 October 2005.  The Irish Ambassador to China, H.E. Declan Kelleher, performed the official opening.  The event was attended by a large number of UCC's educational partners in China along with representatives of Beijing media. The office is located in the prestigious business district of Beijing, a short walk from the Beijing World Trade Centre.
