Lord David Puttnam to launch MA in Film Studies at UCC, 13 October
2005/2006 sees the launch of a new MA in Film Studies in UCC. This
exciting new programme underlines UCC's commitment to the visual arts,
which has already seen the establishment of the Lewis Glucksman Gallery
and a BA degree in History of Art.
For the past ten years UCC students have had the opportunity to take a
number of undergraduate Film Studies modules in various Arts Faculty
departments. The immense popularity of these modules suggested the
viability of establishing a postgraduate programme in the area. This
new MA offers the students the opportunity to further their education
in a thriving discipline, one which has a very active research
community producing cutting-edge work that is of interest to many other
disciplines.
UCC has two specialist Film Studies lecturers on permanent staff (Dr
Laura Rascaroli, Toyota Lecturer in Film and Media Studies, Italian
Department/School of Languages and Literature, and Dr Gwenda Young,
College Lecturer in Film, English Department). Both Dr Rascaroli and Dr
Young have international research profiles in European and American
Film Studies and many years experience of teaching and directing
research. The MA reflects their interests as well as those of
other staff members involved in the programme. The interdepartmental
nature of the MA offers students opportunities to take courses in world
cinema, postcolonialism, musicology, philosophy and sociology of Film,
and digital video.
The Board of Film Studies and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and
Social Sciences are delighted to announce that Lord David Puttnam will
formally launch the MA in Film Studies on Thursday, 13 October. Lord
Puttnam is the Oscar-winning producer of Chariots of Fire, Midnight
Express, Local Hero, The Killing Fields, The Mission and War of the
Buttons filmed in West Cork. Having retired from film production in
1998, Lord Puttnam now focuses on his work in education and politics.
Lord Puttnam will deliver a public lecture titled "Why Film Matters -
Maybe More Than Ever!" on Thursday, 13 October, 8.00 pm, Boole II
Lecture Theatre, Main Campus, UCC. Members of the public are
invited to attend and admission is free.
