An estimated 5000 students, parents and teachers from all over
Ireland, will converge on University College Cork (UCC) on Saturday
next (8 October 2005) to participate in the University's annual Open
Day for Schools.
The Open Day provides students at second level with the opportunity to
see for themselves what University life is all about, to meet lecturers
and to gather as much information as they need about the honours degree
programmes they may later pursue. "The aim is to give the students a
feel for what awaits them when they come to UCC. Lecturers from all
departments will give presentations on course content which will be
followed by a question and answer session. In this forum
prospective students can meet both lecturers and post- graduate
students to raise any questions they might have. It's an opportunity to
look around, tour the facilities and get information on everything from
accommodation, to fees, careers, grants and scholarships," explained
Nóirín Deady, from the Admissions Office, UCC's Disability
Resource Centre will also be available to answer queries about the
facilities and structures available in the University to enables
students with disabilities to pursue any course successfully.
Talks on all Honours Degree Programmes will be repeated regularly
throughout the day. Tours of campus, the new Brookfield Health Sciences
Complex and the Mardyke Sports Arena will also take place. The
Glucksman Art Gallery and the Visitors' Centre will also be open to
students. UCC will celebrate World Space Week by offering
students the opportunity to discover the night sky over Ireland in the
