Innovation in Medical Science - APC Conference, 7 October

Innovations in medical science will be discussed during an exciting and thought-provoking conference at University College Cork (UCC) on October 7th next when issues such as obesity, asthma and stress will examined.

Hosted by UCC's Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), in association with the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (this year celebrating its 350th anniversary), and the Irish Association of Internal Medicine, the conference will provide a platform to discuss the latest advances in medical science.

Dr Sadaf Farooqi, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, will speak about how research on the genetics and treatment of obesity has shed light on how appetite and body weight are regulated.

Dr Terry O'Connor, Mercy University Hospital, Cork, will review the global prevalence of asthma and discuss current and future therapies for the optimal management of the disease.

Professor Ted Dinan, APC, UCC, will discuss chronic stress and depression, and, in particular, how depression increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dr Robert Odze, Brigham and Womens' Hospital, Boston will give the 8th Annual De Pazzi Lecture on "Dysplasia-pathologists dilemma, clinicians' nightmare".  The Annual De Pazzi lecture is held in honour of Sr De Pazzi, former Matron of the Mercy Hospital for her contribution to the health and welfare of the people of Cork.

Other key national and international speakers will present groundbreaking research on areas of gastrointestinal disease, late endocrine effects of malignancy,  kidney disease, chronic inflammation and development of new antimicrobials.

The Conference takes place on Friday, 7 October in Devere Hall, University College Cork.
