Lab in a Lorry Physics Initiative in UCC, 19-23 September

The Faculty of Science is delighted to announce that the Lab in a Lorry initiative, sponsored by the Institute of Physics, the Schlumberger Foundation and Discover Science and Engineering will be visiting UCC for the week commencing Monday 19th September 2005. Lab in a Lorry aims to enthuse the next generation of scientists and engineers by giving young people (11- 14 years) an an opportunity to participate in experimental science in the way that it happens in the real world. The programme has been developed because of concerns about long term supplies of scientists and engineers in UK and Ireland. Students will also participate in a mathematical problem solving challenge and as part of  Hamilton 2005: Celebrating Irish Science they will also learn about the achievements of one of Ireland's greatest scientists, William Rowan Hamilton.

Secondary schools from schools in Cork City and County (First Years/Second Years) have been invited to bring students to take part in one of 3 sessions that will run each day and more than 500 students will attend the event over the course of the week. The students will get to create their own mini blue sky effect and 3d spiral rainbows right inside the lorry. They will also participate in an oil well extraction simulation trying to discover the most efficient way to extract the most oil out in the least time. The final experiment involves trying to shatter resonating wine glasses using sound vibration. All in all a smashing time should be had by all!
