Unique UCC course addresses IT jobs crisis
A recent survey by Dublin City University highlighted a chronic
shortage of IT graduates to fill 8000 current vacancies in the
computing and technology field. UCC provides a number of graduate
conversion courses aimed directly at alleviating the IT jobs
crisis. One particularly unique and innovative course is being
provided by the School of Mathematical Sciences leading to the award of
either a postgraduate Diploma or MSc. The course in Modelling and
Numerical Computing has seen its graduates of 2005 in huge demand with
all of the 2005 class already in employment.
The emphasis of the course is on hands-on practical experience with
programming and numerate software development. According to Course
Director, Dr Kieran Mulchrone "students have 24/7 access to a dedicated
state of the art lab promoting the acquisition of the practical 'hit
the ground running' types of skills actively sought by
companies". In addition, Dr Mulchrone pointed out the unique and
award-winning teaching environment whereby lecturers demonstrate in a
practical way rather than simply talking theory. "Our course not
only gives students excellent programming skills, it also enhances
their numerate and problem solving skills, a key factor in the
competitive IT workplace", he added.
The courses are generously supported by the Higher Education
Authorities "Graduate Skills Conversion Programme" resulting in greatly
reduced fees for participating students. Unlike many other courses
graduates of any discipline are encouraged to apply. The closing date
for applications is July 22nd.
