Science Summer Camps 2005 - a resounding success, 4-8 July
The first week in July heralds in another summer of science camps at
UCC with activities organised for both primary and secondary level
students. Organised by the Faculty of Science, in collaboration
with the Faculties of Engineering and Food Science & Technology the
aim of the camps is to create an awareness of science at primary and
junior cycle level. This year, in addition to the primary camp aimed at
9-11 year olds, an extra camp has been organised to cater for Junior
cycle students in secondary schools (12 -15 year olds).
Demand for the camps has been exceptionally high again this year.
According to organiser, Dr Anne Cronin "the popularity of the camps is
reflected by the demand for places with both camps booked out without
any advertising. Parents, whose children were disappointed last
year, have been telephoning since Christmas to join the waiting list"
said Dr Cronin.
The programme consists of an exciting range of activities such as a
robotics workshop, microbiological investigations, multimedia
technology and computer animation. Also included are testing
fitness levels in the Human Performance lab, food technology, chemistry
magic, fossil hunts, the world of animals, rocket making and adventures
in physics. On Friday 8th July 2005, both groups will take part in a
field ecology trip to Fota Widlife Park, finished off with a visit to
Midleton Old Distillery.
The camps run from 4-8 July next at UCC.
