TRASNA - UCC Festival of Music, 6-8 May
From Javanese Gamelan Music to Boccherini String Quartets, Traditional
Fiddling to Multimedia Performance, and more ... TRASNA, a new MUSIC
FESTIVAL presented by the Department of Music at UCC, reflects the
exciting diversity of music-making for which the department is
internationally renowned.
TRASNA features concerts by THE CRASH ENSEMBLE, THE RTE VANBRUGH STRING
QUARTET, UCC JAVANESE GAMELAN, CONNIE O CONNELL, RICHIE BUCKLEY, and
many more!
The UCC JAVANESE GAMELAN ENSEMBLE, featuring the 40 BRONZE INSTRUMENTS
of the traditional ORCHESTRA of the JAVANESE COURTS, celebrates the
10-year anniversary of its arrival at UCC in a major concert of
traditional Javanese music, newly composed music, puppetry and dance.
Directed by MEL MERCIER, SPECIAL GUESTS include one of the world's
leading Javanese musicians, I.M.HARJITO, and the wonderful dancer MADE
PUJA. The concert takes place in the Aula Maxima at 8pm on Friday 6

THE CRASH ENSEMBLE, Ireland's foremost Multimedia Performance Ensemble,
appears at the Half Moon Club at 9.30pm on Saturday 7 May in a concert
of unparalleled virtuosity and invention. Music by PHILIP GLASS will be
presented alongside world premieres of pieces by UCC lecturer John
Godfrey, and Irene Buckley, the UCC-CRASH Composition Competition

CONNIE O CONNELL has been teaching fiddle at the UCC for over 20 years
and his achievements are celebrated in FIDIL, a concert featuring
Connie and many of his current and former students. Connie has taught
hundreds of fiddle players, and many of them, such as Liz Doherty and
Liz Kane, are amongst the leading traditional musicians of their
generation. Connie will perform with current and former students in the
Aula Maxima at 2pm on Saturday, 7 May. Admission FREE.
Ireland's leading Jazz Saxophone player, RICHIE BUCKLEY, joins PAUL O
DONNELL on keyboards to lead a swinging Jazz band in a lunchtime
concert of HOTCLUB De PARIS style JAZZ on Sunday, 1pm in the Aula
Maxima, UCC. Admission FREE.
TRASNA is presented in conjunction with the annual SMI (Society for
Musicology in Ireland) Conference. During the conference, papers on a
diverse range of musics and related topics will be presented by some of
the leading Irish and international music scholars and performers. One
highlight of the conference will be the presentation-performance by THE
VANBRUGH STRING QUARTET of a quintettino and a quartet by Boccherini.
This is scheduled for 4pm on Saturday, 7 May in the Aula Maxima.
