The Microscopic Environment - Conference, 28/29 April

The cutting-edge technology used to sequence the human genome is now being employed to address environmental problems. The new approach and other advances in the field of "environmental genomics", are being discussed at a two-day conference which began at University College Cork today April 28th 2005.

The conference titled: "Environmental genomics: future microbiological perspectives" has attracted leading experts from throughout Europe as well as Ireland and up to 40 young scientists will present the latest research in the field during the two-day session. The conference is sponsored by the Society for General Microbiology.

Mounting pressures on the environment are a cause of concern for the public, politicians and scientists alike.  These pressures are mainly due to global warming, continuous exposure to pollutants or continued exploitation of the earth's natural resources.  However, at a microscopic level these pressures are most keenly felt and it is at this level that many scientists are now turning their attention.  Environmental genomics could play a significant part in reaching a better understanding of environmental problems and possible solutions. By bringing together European experts and young scientists, it is hoped to bring new insights into how best to advance research that aims to both enhance our environment and provide new products and processes to support the emerging Irish biotechnology industry.

The conference has been organized by UCC's Microbiology Department and takes place at UCC,  April 28/29th 2005.
