Cork Centre 'Going Dutch' on Food for Health, 22 April

The Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, Ireland's leading research centre in gut health, will host 47 Dutch scientists at UCC this week for scientific discussions and cultural activities.  The Wageningen Centre for Food Science (WCFS) is the leading research centre for Food Science in the Netherlands and is widely recognised as one of the premier food research organisation in the World.  The Dutch scientists chose Cork as the location for their annual scientific retreat because it was seen as an opportunity to create and strengthen scientific linkages with the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC).  Cork is home to the APC, a Science Foundation Ireland funded research center headquartered in UCC, with scientists and clinicians also based in Teagasc Moorepark, Cork University Hospital and Alimentary Health Ltd.

The scientists will get together on Friday, 22nd  April for a one day symposium called "Green-Orange Culture Symposium - Irish-Dutch Gut Health Research Meeting".  The Irish and Dutch scientists (in addition to researchers from almost 20 other nations working in both centres) will hear presentations from internationally recognised scientists at the two research centres, discussing their recent work on topics ranging from microbial food safety to stress and functional bowel disorders.

Professor Willem de Vos, Director of the WCFS is enthusiastic about their upcoming visit "We are very excited to be coming to Cork as the scientists from WCFS will have a great opportunity to share ideas with researchers at the APC, and this will help to cement the collaborations already in place between our two research institutions", he said.

It will not be all work for the WCFS scientists, as they will take a break from their busy work programme to attend a hurling clinic at the Mardyke Arena sports grounds on Thursday afternoon (21st April). They will also visit Blarney prior to Friday's symposium, to be bestowed with the Gift of the Gab so they can match the verbal skills of their Cork-based counterparts!

The Symposium takes place Friday next, 22nd April at UCC.
