Shanghai Delegation Visits UCC
UCC recently hosted a visit by a delegation from Shanghai in advance of
the official Cork-Shanghai sister-city ceremony, which will take place
on 19 May 2005. The delegation, led by Mr Sun Weimin, Assistant
Director General, Shanghai Municipal Affairs Office, had meetings in
UCC with Professor Gabriel Crean, Department of Microelectronics, Dr
Alaistair Glass, Chair of the Tyndall Institute and Ms Louise Tobin,
International Education Officer. The delegation also met with a
group of Shanghainese students currently studying in UCC.
The visit paves the way for the official twinning of Cork and Shanghai,
which will be formalized next month. The UCC relationship with
Shanghai is critical to the success of the civic twinning since UCC has
significant relationships with prestigious partner universities in
Shanghai such as Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and
East China Normal University (ECNU).
"The twinning marks an important phase in our relations with China"
said UCC's International Education Officer, Louise Tobin. "A large
number of the Chinese student cohort at UCC hail from Shanghai and, for
this group, the twinning represents a recognition of the important ties
which bind our two cities."
