UCC leads the way in Marie Curie Research Funding

University College Cork (UCC) is the highest recipient of funding under the EU's prestigious Marie Curie research programme.   Since the inception of the programme UCC has received almost 4.0 million euro.

The Marie Curie Research Programme is the vehicle through which the EU spearheads the drive to make the European Union one of the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economies in the world - an ambition enshrined in the Lisbon Declaration of March 2000.  It supports researchers throughout the EU third level institutions and promotes cross fertilization between institutions.

The Marie Curie Actions, as they are known, are designed to enhance career prospects for researchers while promoting the EU's ambitious research ideals. Eligibility for the various Marie Curie schemes is based on research experience and expertise, rather than age.  All levels are covered from researchers at the start of their career to world-class researchers with well-established scientific expertise.  The actions are also open to business, universities and institutions active in research. The funding programme is part of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme, the European Union's research funding programme which has a budget of 1,580m euro.

According to Dr David Corkery, UCC's Project Officer "This success identifies UCC and Ireland as an attractive center for world class research and training across a wide range of disciplines from process engineering to migration studies.  Indeed Ireland's only Marie Curie excellence team (one of only 18 awarded across Europe from over 230 applications in 2004) was in Migration Studies.  This was an exceptional achievement by UCC's Caitriona Ui Laoire (Geography) who received funding of 1.2m euro to lead a European team which will be based at UCC, in migration research studies. Other successful recipients are in areas of environmental chemistry, biochemistry, nanotechnology, electrical engineering, marine engineering and food science again highlighting the international standing of UCC researchers across a wide array of research fields", he said.
