Winter Conferring Ceremonies at University College Cork (UCC), 14 December 2005



Winter conferring ceremonies commenced today (14 December 2005) at University College Cork with over 500 students conferred from the Faculties of Food Science and Law and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences.  Among those conferred were 175 with a Higher Diploma in Education (HDipinEd); 22 with a Higher Diploma in Co-operative Organisation, Food Marketing and Rural Development (HDIpCOFMktgRD), 19 with a Diploma in Common Law (DipCL) and 78 with a Diploma in Law (DipL).  Twelve students graduated with a Diploma in Arts whilst 14 graduated with a Higher Diploma in Counselling (HDipCoun) followed by 18 who graduated with a Higher Diploma in Guidance & Counselling (HDipGC).  Thirty students graduated with a Higher Diploma in Learning Support (HDipLSupport); 24 with a Higher Diploma in Health Economics (HDipHEcon) and 12 with a Higher Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy Studies (HDipIPsychS).

The Conferring address was given by Professor Paul Giller, Registrar and Vice-President for Academic Affairs.  The ceremonies continue tomorrow (15 December) and conclude on Friday (16 December).

In his Conferring address, Professor Giller referred to the changing campus of UCC and welcomed the go-ahead for the IT building which will further enhance the teaching and research facilities at UCC.  He also referred to UCC's position as a leading European University and the major internal restructuring process.  "An essential part of this is the reorganization of the existing seven faculty structure into four Colleges to focus the university's research and teaching efforts."  He added "The restructuring will lead to many further developments in the future, where closer collaboration between disciplines within and between the Colleges will foster new and exciting interdisciplinary programmes."  He concluded by welcoming the recent announcement by the Minister for Education for the provision of extra funding for the universities which will provide the opportunity to develop the third level sector into a strong, vibrant and internationally competitive fourth level sector, driving research and producing postgraduates at the forefront of their chosen disciplines.
