University College Cork Continues to Attract Excellent Students Nationwide

Fifty-two entrance scholarship winners were honoured today at University College Cork  at a special ceremony organised by the Admissions Office.  Each student was presented with a parchment by the University President Professor Gerard T. Wrixon to mark their achievement.  The ceremony was followed by a reception for the scholarship holders, their parents, school principals and guidance counsellors. Academic staff also joined in the celebration.

Entrance scholarships are awarded each year to students across all faculties on the basis of the Leaving Certificate results. All of the scholarship winners this year achieved 575 points or higher in the Leaving Certificate; 32 students achieved the maximum of 600 points. Mr. Con O'Brien, Acting Registrar, explained that these results clearly demonstrate University College Cork's continuing ability to attract the brightest students to its campus.

Professor Wrixon congratulated the scholarship holders on their outstanding achievements.  He also paid tribute to the professionalism, enthusiasm and commitment of their teachers.  He extended his congratulations to the families and friends of the scholarship recipients for their continued support and encouragement.

Professor Wrixon also announced a major expansion of the Entrance Scholarship Scheme involving an increase in the number of Entrance Scholarships with each full scholarship increasing in value to euro2,000.  The President said that this decision reflected the university's ongoing commitment to supporting high achievers in the Leaving Certificate.

The Ceremony takes place in Devere Hall, Aras na Mac Léinn, University College Cork, 7pm, 1 March 2005.
