POET TO BE HONOURED WITH UCC ALUMNUS  ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Paul Durcan, one of Ireland's most celebrated and popular poets, is to be honoured with a UCC Alumnus Achievement Award by UCC's Faculty of Arts. The 2005 Awards Ceremony takes place this evening (Friday 9 December 2005) at UCC.

A native of Dublin, Paul Durcan graduated from UCC in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Archaeology and Medieval History.

Paul Durcan has dedicated his life to writing poetry with a career spanning over thirty years. His poetry has long been celebrated for a lyrical, freewheeling style that rejoices in the ordinary. His poems often evoke the themes of love, eroticism and loss and can be intensely personal.  Paul is also renowned as an outspoken critic of his native country and as a political and moral commentator on Ireland's emergence from the repression of the 1950s to the contradictions of the present day.  His work can be aggressively satirical.  His poetry has been most outspoken in condemning sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church and the body politic.

He has produced a significant body of work and is the author of nineteen acclaimed volumes of poetry.  His collections include Teresa's Bar (1976), O Westport in the Light of Asia Minor (1975), A Snail in My Prime (1993) and Greetings to our Friends In Brazil (1999).  His most recent book Art of Life was published in London in 2004.

Paul has received numerous awards and accolades over his long career.  In 1974 he won the Patrick Kavanagh Award; in 1989 the Irish American Cultural Institute Poetry Award; in 1990 the Whitbread Prize for his collection, Daddy, Daddy, and in 1995 he was joint winner of The Heinemann Award.

In 1985 Paul was Poet-in-Residence at the Frost Place, New Hampshire, USA and in 1990 was Writer-in-Residence in Trinity College Dublin. Most recently Paul was appointed by The Ireland Chair of Poetry as Ireland Professor of Poetry, 2004-2007. He is also a member of Aosdána.

Paul has been invited to read his poetry all around the world, and has acquired a reputation as a performing artist with his dramatic and incantatory reading style that brings a wild vibrant energy to his readings.  His popular weekly broadcasts to the nation on RTE Radio 1's Today with Pat Kenny, part autobiography, part opinion and reflection, defence and accusation were published as Paul Durcan's Diary in 2003.

Paul cherished his time at UCC where, as he says "I was fortunate to have three wonderful teachers: Professor M J O'Kelly in Archaeology, Professor John G Barry in Medieval History and Professor John A Murphy in Everything - he was a mentor to me".  On learning of his Alumnus Achievement Award Paul said "I regard this Award as a true acknowledgement of all that they have given me".

DISTINGUISHED POLITICIAN TO BE HONOURED WITH UCC ALUMNUS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Politician Barry Desmond is to be honoured with a UCC Alumnus Achievement Award. The 2005 Awards Ceremony takes place this evening (Friday 9 December 2005) at UCC.

Mr Desmond is being honoured by the Faculty of Commerce for his distinguished career in public service at national and European level.

Barry Desmond graduated from UCC in 1956 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master's in Commerce in 1965.

After graduation Barry Desmond followed in his father's footsteps and entered the world of the trade union movement and labour party politics. He became a trade union official with the Irish Transport and General Workers Union and in 1961 became the first Education Officer and Industrial Officer of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Barry was a central participant in shaping Irish politics for over three decades culminating in his appointment as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. In 1969 Barry was elected as the first Labour TD for Dun Laoghaire reflecting a significant upsurge in support for the Labour party across the country at that time. He was appointed Minister of State at the Department of Finance in 1981 under the short-lived Labour/Fine Gael coalition.  In 1982 he was appointed Minister for Health and Social Welfare where he implemented many reforming policies over the five years in that post.  He was Chairman of Dublin City Council and a member of the Council of State which advises the President of Ireland.  Barry became Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in 1982, under Dick Spring's leadership. He entered European politics in 1989 when he was elected Labour MEP for Dublin. He was appointed to the European Court of Auditors in 1994.

Throughout his career Barry's habit of telling it like he saw it kept him close to controversy during thirty years in politics.  He repeatedly challenged the once high and mighty, from beef barons to bishops and trade unionists to Taoisigh.  He remained his own man as often at loggerheads with some within his own party as with opponents. From opposing his own party's stand on EU membership in the 1970s, he took on the Catholic Church over contraception in the 1980s and played a crucial back-room role in Labour's success in the 1990s.

Barry's political memoir, Finally and In conclusion: A Political Memoir, published in 2000, reflects on his long and successful career in public service. Barry cites his proudest achievements as his support for Ireland's participation in the EU; his advocacy of the Sunningdale and Anglo-Irish Agreements and his often controversial reforms in health and social welfare.

Barry is currently writing his personal memoirs, he is an Honorary Fellow of the Department of Politics, University College Dublin, a Council Member of the Irish Maritime Institute and a trustee of the Dalkey School Project.

Barry Desmond has many cherished memories of his time at UCC including the people, in particular "Professor Busteed in Economics, Professor John A Murphy in History, Mick Barry the gardener and Seán O Riada, the renowned Irish composer."
