During May-June 2026 Professor Máiréad Dunne delivered keynote presentations at international events held in University College Dublin and Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan.  

Migration beyond Emergencies Symposium, UCD, 28-29 May

Professor Máiréad Dunne gave an opening keynote entitled ‘Methodological monotony, conceptual cramp and theoretical tedium’ at the “Migration beyond Emergencies: tracing testimony and diaspora” international symposium organised by Ambra Bergamasco and Tasneem Filaih, Humanities Institute, UCD held on the 28th and 29th May.

In her talk Máiréad pointed to the colonial vestiges that are sustained within education institutions at all levels and that remain integral to the production of citizen identities. In particular, she emphasised the implications for researching with mobile subjects and migrant populations. Máiréad also presented a joint paper entitled Invisibilities and absences in youth accounts of becoming migrants: testimonies from Senegal’ on behalf of her co-authors Mamadou Sangharé and Gunjan Wadhwa.

Gender Work and Organisation 16th international conference, Nazarbayev University, 8-10 June

Professor Dunne gave the final keynote address Education, Power and Belonging: Reimagining futures across unequal worlds’ at the Gender Work and Organisation 16th international conference held at Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan 8-10 June 2026. With the theme ‘Rethinking Futures: Care, Labour and the Politics of Belonging’ this conference drew contributors from across the globe to discuss research and development across this diverse field. Care and support for newer researchers was another key feature with Máiréad leading a session entitled ‘Ethics, Reflexivity and Positionality’ in a pre-conference doctoral research day. UCC was also represented by Dr Cliodhna MacKenzie from CUBS who presented an excellent joint paper with Prof. Tom Garavan entitled ‘Fertility Benefits in Organizations: Quid Pro Quo or Pro Bono?’. The intersection of social sciences and business highlighted throughout the GWO conference were echoed in the UCC connections.
