Charms, Charmers and Charming in Ireland: From the Medieval to the Modern

27 Jan 2020
(L to R): Prof. John Carey, Dr Ciarán Ó Gealbháin, Ms Ilona Tuomi, Dr James Kapalo

On the 24 January in the Seomra Caidrimh, O’Rahilly Building, UCC, Dr James Kapalo of the Study of Religions Department launched  new publication, Charms, Charmers and Charming in Ireland: From the Medieval to the Modern. This is the first book to examine the full range of the evidence for Irish charms. As Ireland has one of the oldest literatures in Europe, and also one of the most comprehensively recorded folklore traditions, it affords a uniquely rich body of evidence for such an investigation.

The book was published by the University of Wales Press in their ‘New Approaches to Celtic Religion and Mythology’ series. Three of the four editors are from the School of Irish Learning, UCC: Ilona Tuomi is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Early and Medieval Irish where John Carey is Professor; Ciarán Ó Gealbháin lectures in the Department of Folklore and Ethnology while Barbara Hillers is Associate Professor in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University, Bloomington.
