GP and PCT dementia workshops
The PREPARED (primary care education, pathways and research of dementia) project team has recently published dementia workshop facilitator's guides and powerpoint resources for both General Practitioners and for members of Primary Care Teams (PCTs) to use in small groups to enhance their dementia care.
The GP facilitator's workshop guide provides detailed content to assist GP facilitators in the preparation and delivery of 2 1-hour (or 1 2-hour) dementia workshops. The guide comes with workshop materials, including Powerpoint presentation slide images, supporting facilitator notes and detailed referenced explanatory notes. The workshops are designed to be interactive and case based and cover:
- 'Confirming the timely diagnosis of dementia care'
- 'The management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia'
The workshops are accredited for CPD points by the ICGP - further information on CPD certification available from the PREPARED team. Over the last year the workshops have been run in locations across Ireland by a small team of experienced GP facilitators, reaching over 200 GPs in their practices. In addition, the workshops have also been run by a small number of CME tutors in the Cork and Waterford areas in local small group meetings reaching a further 100 GPs. The PCT facilitator's workshop guide provides materials including Powerpoint presentation slide images and detailed notes for a 3-hour workshop and is designed to assist workshop facilitators in the preparation and delivery of an interactive, interprofessional learning experienced for all members of a Primary Care Team. The workshop is accredited for 3 CEU credits by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. The workshop covers 5 areas:
- Knowledge of dementia
- Understanding roles and responsibilities
- Team functioning and collaboration
- Interprofessional communication skills
- Supporting the person with dementia and their family
We are currently working with the HSE National Dementia Office and other colleagues to arrange for this PCT based workshop to be rolled out to areas nationally.
