On Tuesday the 19th of November 2019, Dr Elaine McCarthy of UCC’s School of Food and Nutritional Sciences was presented with her British Nutrition Foundation Drummond Early Career Scientist Runner-up Award in London.

The British Nutrition Foundation was established 50 years ago and exists to deliver authoritative, evidence-based information on food and nutrition in the context of health and lifestyle. The Foundation’s work is conducted and communicated through a unique blend of nutrition science, education and media activities. The British Nutrition Foundation Drummond Early Career Scientist Award recognises nutrition scientists in their early career who show great potential to be future leaders in the field.

Elaine was recognised for her work in the field of paediatric and neonatal nutrition, with iron nutrition in young children being the focus of much of her research. As part of this award, Elaine’s invited review entitled “the neonatal period: a missed opportunity for the prevention of iron deficiency and its associated neurological consequences?” is now published in the Nutrition Bulletin (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/nbu.12407).
