Dr. Michael W. (Bill) Bennett qualified in medicine at University College Cork and completed a PhD thesis in tumour immunology under the supervision of Professor Gerry O'Sullivan and Professor Fergus Shanahan. Following training in medicine  and obtaining membership of the Royal College of physicians of Ireland, Dr. Bennett trained in pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), Boston.

Dr. Bennett was appointed as a consultant post at BWH, a Harvard University system Hospital, prior to returning to Ireland to take up a consultant post in Cork. He is currently Head of Department at the Pathology Department, Cork University Hospital.

Research

Dr. Bennett's research interests include gastrointestinal disease including cancer, breast cancer, sarcomas, digital pathology, and molecular pathology. Dr. Bennett has participated in many collaborative projects with UCC and international researchers.
