UCC Confucius Institute Successfully Holds 2018 Chinese New Year Celebrations

At 6pm on the 7th February Irish time, UCC CI successfully held their 2018 Chinese New Year Celebration. Department of Asian Studies strongly supported the occasion.

The Honorable Tony Fitzgerald, Mayor of Cork; Dr. Yue Xiaoyong, Ambassador of the Chinese Embassy of Ireland; John O'Halloran, Executive Vice President of Cork University; Dr. Marian Mc Carthy, Acting Deputy Dean of University College Cork, Mr. Zheng Dawei, Head of Education Section, Chinese Embassy of China, Mr. Pan Xiongwen, Political Department, Chinese Embassy, Secretary Jiang Yingbo, Chinese Embassy, Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, University College Cork, Professor of Economic Development Planning Office of Cork City Council Director Patrick Ledwidge and Dr. Xu Xiaohong, Chinese Dean of the Confucius Institute at University College Cork attended the event. Meanwhile, both Chinese and foreign deans of the Confucius Institute of University College Dublin, members of Cork and Kerry county councils, relevant persons in charge of various departments of University College Cork, Chinese overseas Chinese enterprises and community representatives, middle school principals and parents working with the Confucius Institute of Cork, University College Cork Students, visiting professors, and local media were also invited to attend the event.
At half past six, our Confucius Institute teachers took the lead in performing the opening dance and began the evenings festivities. Later, Lord Tony Fitzgerald, Mayor of Cork City, Dr. Yue Xiaoyong, the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, and Professor John O'Halloran, Executive Vice President of University College Cork respectively made speeches to mark the occasion. Professor Xu Hao, a visiting scholar and well-known painter in University College Cork, was also invited and displayed his paintings of the Cork landscape, presenting three of them to the Cork City Council, Chinese Embassy and University College Cork, as gifts.
The amazing performance by both Chinese and Foreigners included dancing, singing, diabolo,drums, tai chi, martial arts, poetry recitals, and cheongsam show brought a visual and auditory feast for attendees. In the meantime, the three-round raffle invigorated the atmosphere of the auditorium, with everyone taking part. In the end, all the performers sang “ We are family” together, brining a successful end to the celebration. And then the honorable guests and performers took group photos to remember the moment. The event allowed the Chinese community living in a foreign place to feel the warmth of the Chinese Spring Festival, while letting the local audience appreciate the fascinating charm of Chinese culture.
The fresh atmosphere of the spring will bring new fortune to all. The Confucius Institute of Ireland looks forward to working together and discovering what lies ahead.
