Advancing Child-Friendly Cities Across the UNIC Network

Child-Friendly City group meets for a valuable in-person exchange on advancing children’s rights and participation in urban environments.
Dr. Shirley Martin (UCC) and Katherine Harford (Chair, Cork Child Friendly City Forum) recently presented a paper at the UNIC (European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition) Thematic Conference in Malmö. The panel entitled “Enhancing Child Well-Being and Rights: Participation and Access to Urban Environments and Resources" was coordinated by Shirley Martin and Sernaz Arslan (Koç University,Turkey), and brought together members of the UNIC Child-Friendly City group for a valuable in-person exchange on advancing children’s rights and participation in urban environments.
Panelists included:
- Carolina Martinez and Ulrika Sjöberg (Malmö University)
- Joanna Leek and Daria Woźniak (University of Łódź)
- Zorana Uzelac (City of Zagreb)
This work is part of a growing interdisciplinary collaboration between UCC’s School of Applied Social Studies, the School of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, the Cork Child Friendly City Forum, and four partner universities within the UNIC alliance.
Together, the group is exploring how Child-Friendly City initiatives are being developed across UNIC cities. Representatives from Cork, Istanbul, Malmo, Lodz and Zagreb are sharing experiences from their local contexts, highlighting both the challenges and achievements in meaningfully involving children and young people in shaping the cities they live in. This collaboration marks an exciting step forward in building a network within UNIC focused on making cities more inclusive, responsive, and participatory for children.
