Autism Spectrum Studies at UCC

This innovative course is designed to introduce you to the different ways in which people on the autistic spectrum experience the world. The historical and social practices that enabled autism to be identified from the early twentieth century are explored. There will be an emphasis on the communication and behavioural challenges for the individual with autism and how society responds to these challenges and also how a person with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may contribute positively to society. The issue of mental health and ASD will be examined. You will learn the importance of early intervention, education and inclusion, and legislation and policies that govern best practice guidelines and models of service.
