Songs of Identity and Freedom

St. Peter's – Fromer Vision Centre – North Main Street, Cork

Cork Chamber Choir are delighted to present a programme of songs exploring the patriotic voices of Ireland and Spain. The music in this concert highlights the intertwined histories of the two countries and lays bare the quest for national identity that has shaped our modern lives. The performance will feature newly commissioned music by Ben Hanlon (Birth of a Nation) composed using speeches by great Irish Patriots 1803-1922 and by Sam Barker (Shipwrecked) on the fate of the Spanish Armada. The choir will sing a setting of the traditional Mo Ghile Mear and give the Irish premiere of works by Argentinian composer Dante Andreo, set in the Spanish Civil War, and based on the texts of Lorca and Cabrera.
The concert is presented in association with the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, University College Cork.
