UCC discuss Sexual Violence and Harassment Policies and Procedures in Higher Education at the Joint Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science

23 Sep 2026

UCC appeared at the Joint Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science on 23 September 2026 to discuss Sexual Violence and Harassment Policies and Procedures in Higher Education Institutions.

Deputy President and Registrar, Professor Stephen Byrne, outlined the University’s institution-wide commitment, prevention, education, support and continuous improvement in tackling sexual violence and harassment. In his opening statement, Professor Byrne outlined that UCC’s sector-leading bystander intervention programme “is embedded across a wide range of our academic disciplines for both staff and student cohorts, and student leadership groups at UCC, helping to foster a culture of shared responsibility, respect and inclusion.”

Professor Byrne was joined by Professor Louise Crowley, Director of the Bystander Intervention Programme, and Michael Hanrahan, Head of Employee Relations, Specialist Support and Resolution Services.

UCC contributed positively to a wider sectoral discussion on strengthening prevention measures, reporting mechanisms and survivor-centred supports across higher education institutions.
