UCC President outlines sustainability journey at international workshop

UCC President, Professor John O’Halloran, MRIA, presented the story of UCC’s sustainability journey at the 11th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric, which took place at the Université Côte d’Azur in June.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, is a global effort to assess and promote sustainability practices in universities around the world. The annual International Workshop on UI GreenMetric supports universities to share their sustainability achievements through cooperation and sharing of best practice to drive impactful change. This year’s theme, “Doing Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education: The Story of Our Institution and Society,” brought together university rectors, institutional leaders, and sustainability experts to share inspiring stories of how their campuses are actively contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At this workshop, Professor O’Halloran shared the story of UCC’s sustainability journey over more than a quarter of a century to become the 4th most sustainable university in the world in the UI GreenMetric Rankings. He described how the sustainability ecosystem at UCC builds on a successful people-centred blend of top-down, bottom-up and middle-out approaches in the delivery of institutional competencies to advance sustainability. This has proven to be an effective approach that includes students, staff and leadership, and ensures representation of stakeholders working at all levels, resulting in an authentic whole-university approach.
During this event, Professor O’Halloran was presented with the 2024 award for 4th in the UI GreenMetric ranking 0f 2024.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari MM MSc, Chairperson, UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, presents Professor John O’Halloran with a plaque recognising UCC’s position as fourth most sustainable university in the world.
