Founded in 1977 by UCC medical students, Surgeon Noonan was established in honour of Dr Tim Noonan, a UCC-trained surgeon who dedicated much of his career to medical work in Nigeria and the Congo before his death in 1975. Now the largest student-run charity in Ireland, Surgeon Noonan supports medical aid in sub Saharan Africa—funding infrastructure such as maternity wards and HIV clinics, along with essential supplies like antibiotics and sterile equipment.

The charity has raised over €280,000 this year, marking the highest fundraising total ever achieved by a student-led charity nationally. UCC President Professor John O’Halloran MRIA recently met with the students behind the initiative to commend their exceptional efforts. At a special reception, the group shared an overview of their work and celebrated their achievements over the past year.
