5 Dec 2023

Three of our colleagues in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics received a President's Awards for Excellence in Teaching this year: Drs. Gerardene Meade-Murphy and Frank van Pelt (Team Award) and Cathal McCarthy (Early Career Award).

We would like to congratulate them on their well-deserved achievements. Drs. Meade-Murphy and van Pelt received a team award for the development of a ground-breaking package of online interactive teaching material for the BSc. Programmes in Paramedic Studies. This provides accessible and inclusive learning, interactivity, engagement, and support for the paramedic students undertaking the pharmacology module, as they simultaneously face challenges of managing their clinical duties.

Dr McCarthy received an Early Career Award for designing new Pharmacology modules for BSc in Medical and Health Sciences, and including different forms of assessment in each module to capture the range of multiple intelligences of students and enhance the learning process for all students. The inclusion of multiple types of assessment also lends to the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework as it provides techniques that make my modules more applicable to students with different backgrounds, learning styles, abilities and disabilities.

The Department extends heartfelt congratulations to all awardees for their outstanding contributions to pharmacology education at UCC.
