Summer Internships

UCC Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics were delighted to welcome several summer students who were awarded grants from the Physiological Society, the Health Research Board and University College Cork.

Summer Internships and Grants 

As we head into the new semester ahead, we at the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics reflect on a busy summer. We were delighted to welcome several summer students who were awarded grants from the Physiological Society, the Health Research Board and University College Cork to work in our lab. These summer internships are competitive summer internships which fund students to gain hands-on lab experience during their summer vacation. The students who were awarded grants include:

 

Physiological Society Summer Internship 

Eimear Kelly is a 3rd year Med Health student here in UCC. With guidance from her supervisor Dr Roisin Kelly- Laubscher her project focused on "the role of NAPE-PLD in S1P induced cardio protection."

 

Train Internship

Elena O'Keefe is a 2nd year BSc Med Health student. Alongside Dr Roisin Kelly- Laubscher Elena's project focused on "Protecting the heart against the hidden cardiotoxicity of doxorubicin in an experimental model of ischemia-reperfusion injury."

Alanna Denny is a 3rd year Med Health student. With the supervision of Dr Órla P. Barry and Dr Tracey O’ Donovan her project focused on "Investigating the effects of epigenetic drug treatment in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma."

Chelsea Minehane is a 3rd year BSc Med Health student. Supervised by Dr Rachel D. Moloney her project was aimed at "Identification of neuronal activation patterns in an animal model of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder."

Eibjlis Myers is a 2nd year BSc Med Health student. With supervision and guidance from Dr Rachel D. Moloney their project examined "The Role of the Gut Microbiota in Traumatic Stress."

Anne-Marie O'Callaghan is also a 2nd year Med Health student. Supervised by Dr Cathal McCarthy her project focused on "Investigating the dangerous liaisons between omental adipocyte size and maternal BMI in Gestational Diabetes Mellitis (GDM)"

Gbolahan Clinton Falana is a 3rd year BSc Med Health student. Alongside Dr Cathal McCarthy their project titled “Elucidate the role of the nutraceutical L-ergothioneine in mediating trophoblast invasion".

Mark Leahy a 2nd year BSC student in Med Health. With supervision from Dr Barry Boland they examined “the role of HTRA1 in tau proteolysis”.

Daniel Joyce a 3rd year BSc Med Health student. Supervised by Dr Barry Boland his project focused on “Investigating the role of zinc uptake into the endosomal-lysosomal system of cultured rat neurons”

Summer Internship

Marie Hegarty a 3rd year Biochemistry student here in UCC. Supervised by Dr Maria Buckley, they examined “The role of the renin angiotensin system in intestinal inflammation”.

Yara Kassamani a 1st year GEM student in UCC. Supervised by Dr Maria Buckley, their project focused on “investigation of the immunologic basis for post ablation syndrome following treatment of hepatic metastatic disease”

HRB Grant

Robert Callaghan received the HRB Summer Studentship this year. Robert is a 3rd year BPharm student. Alongside Dr Barry Boland, they focused on “Investigating the role of zinc in the generation of truncated forms of tau protein”

 

All of us at the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics are immensely proud of all the students hard work over the summer months.
