Sarah Mabelson has been awarded the prize for top marks in the Prescribing Safely Assessment by the British Pharmacological Society

Sarah Mabelson has been awarded a prize by the British Pharmacological Society (https://www.bps.ac.uk/) for her performance at the Prescribing Safely Assessment (PSA) held recently in University College Cork.

Sarah achieved top marks from among over 90 students in the fourth and final years of their MB degree who sat the assessment in UCC.

The PSA is an online assessment of knowledge, skills and judgement related to prescribing medicines. The competencies identified as needing assessment are

  • writing new prescriptions
  • reviewing existing prescriptions
  • calculating drug doses
  • identifying and avoiding both adverse drug reactions and medication errors
  • amending prescriptions to suit individual patient circumstances

Each year students in the fourth and final years of their undergraduate medical degree are offered the opportunity to sit for the PSA.

The initiative to offer students at University College Cork the opportunity to sit for the PSA is organised by the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and is supported by the School of Medicine and College of Medicine & Health, UCC.
