The Centre for Global Development (CGD) recently hosted the launch of author Peadar King’s latest book, What in the World: Political Travels in Africa, Asia and the Americas.

The book was launched by Pat Breen, TD, Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade and Fr Fachtna O'Driscoll, Provincial Leader SMA (Society of Africa Missions), Blackrock, Cork. Nick Chisholm, a member of the CGD Executive Management Committee and who also works in Department of Food Business and Development, addressed the well-attended event, followed by Peadar King.

This book, published by Liffey Press (2013), stems from the television series What in the World? which has been broadcast on RTÉ television over the past decade, and on which Peadar is a presenter/producer. Set in Africa, Asia and the Americas, the book features seldom-heard human stories – stories of intense pain and suffering, of small triumphs and occasional advances, of betrayal and complicity, of utter resilience and stout defiance. Peadar provides an in-depth and compelling look at the human cost of flawed ideologies and distorted priorities.

Dr Paul Conway, CGD Associate Director, comments: “An important dimension of the work of UCC’s Centre for Global Development revolves around building relationships with NGOs and other partners in support of global development. The launch of Peadar King’s political travelogue, based on the long running “What in the World” television series, is a good example the CGD’s support for and collaboration with a Cork-based author and film production company director”.
