UCC will cheer on its student sports stars this Monday 9 December, when 80 Sports Scholarships and 11 Development Awards will be presented across a wide variety of sports.

The Roy Keane UCC Sport 100 Soccer Scholarships and the Michael J Dowling Hurling Scholarships are among those being issued at the UCC Sports Scholarships 2013/14.

UCC sporting heroes are also being remembered again this year, including the Jason Foley Memorial Scholarship, in honour of the memory of Jason Foley who died on the basketball court of sudden cardiac death syndrome while playing for his local club Glenmary BC Midleton. Three scholarships will also be awarded in memory of Jonathan Herlihy, who drowned tragically while attempting to save two others from drowning.

Six students will become the inaugural awardees of the High Performance Athlete Entry Scheme (HPAE). Launched by Dr Michael Murphy President, UCC in January 2013, the scheme has fielded wide demand, with over 80 applications received. Such was the success of this scheme, the University is rebranding it under the recently announced ‘Quercus Talented Programme’, offering students the opportunity to apply for scholarships in a number of areas including sport.

Sponsored scholarships have been renewed again this year, a testament to how the scholarship scheme is viewed in the wider community. Cadbury Ireland continues their sponsorship of an aspiring U21 Gaelic Footballer in addition to their sponsorship of the All Ireland U21 Series. PSE Kinsale Energy Ltd will sponsor the Rugby Award. Bank of Ireland, proud sponsors of the UCC Sports Clubs, are again sponsoring three scholarships for aspiring first years. Kukri Sport is continuing their sponsorship of gear for the scholarship recipients.

19 students are to receive Munster Council GAA Bursaries, with three students receiving additional administration awards.

Seven players will also receive Player Development Awards from UCC Soccer Club, as distinct from the Scholarship Scheme. The Club began its Player Development Programme a number of years ago and it is growing substantially. Four athletes are also being honoured with Athletic Development Awards.

The event is organised by the Department of Sport & Physical Activity, UCC. UCC’s new Director of Sport, Declan Kidney, will present the awards with Dr Ian Pickup, Head of Student Experience. This year, 20 club sports will be recognised with kickboxing, table tennis & swimming making a welcome return. Other sports to be honoured with UCC Sports Scholarships include Rowing, Ladies Gaelic Football, Sailing, Rugby, Soccer, Ladies Soccer, Hurling, Golf, Ladies & Men’s Hockey, Gaelic Football, Camogie, Basketball, Athletics, Orienteering, Ladies Rugby, Tae Kwon Do and Triathlon.

The event takes place at 1pm this Monday 9 December 2013 in the Mardyke Sports Pavilion, Mardyke Sports Grounds, UCC. For further queries, please contact the event organiser Christine O'Donovan, Deputy Director of Sport & Physical Activity on C.odonovan@ucc.ie
