UCC is one of only seven global finalists in the Times Higher Education University World Rankings film competition, with an entry from Stephen Bean. The winner will be announced this month.

UCC is also the only Irish finalist in the competition, which asks entrants to ensure their video is no more than 20 seconds long. The six other finalists include:

  • Lappeenranta University of Technology - Finland
  • Osaka University - Japan
  • Plymouth University - England
  • University of Newcastle - Australia
  • Bangor University - Wales
  • Nanyang Technological University - Singapore

Judging will take place in November, with the winning criteria partly based on video view-count. UCC's entry covers the crucial aspect of Outreach, drawing on the colourful presentation skills of UCC’s Declan Kennedy and his magic show, as part of the UCCPLUS+ programme:

Working with secondary schools, the UCC PLUS+ Programme (formerly Access Programme) seeks to provide motivational and educational assistance to students throughout their secondary schooling to enhance their ability to compete for third level places.

The short was made by Stephen Bean, AVMS cameraman, assisted by Job Bridge intern Elaine Lucy (B-roll).

Entries can cover any aspect of the institution beyond the 13 performance indicators used to create the prestigious THEWorld University Rankings, from the quality of research or teaching, to the social and cultural life, employment opportunities, or the campus environment.
