Student ambassadors meet President Higgins

26 Apr 2013

UCC International Student Ambassadors were recently honoured at the Government of Ireland Scholar and Student Ambassador Awards Ceremony.

The event on Friday April 19th took place in the Department of Education, Dublin, which was followed by a trip to Áras an Uachtaráin to meet President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.

Student ambassadors Audrey Dearing and Kritarth Seth met with Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn TD and President Higgins during the event, with fellow student ambassadors Rachel Walker and Gangotri Dey there in spirit due to prior commitments.

Audrey, who hails from the USA and Kritarth from India, had spent the last year composing blogs to raise awareness around Irish education and assisting and encouraging interested students from overseas as they embark on their search for the right university or college.

Some of the advice offered includes:

“Enjoy being in Cork! Cork people are (in my opinion) the friendliest in Ireland, and they love talking about Cork" (Audrey Dearing, USA).

“I highly recommend UCC for higher education as it is a very nice mix of international atmosphere, great teachers and a wide range of facilities for the students. The laboratories are well equipped and the library is full of literary marvels” (Kritarth Seth, India).

“I thought that seeing the world from a foreigner’s eyes would teach me more than I could ever learn at home. I also really wanted to do a degree that focused on the business-side of food as opposed to the science-side” (Rachel Walker, USA).

Ireland’s Student Ambassador Programme is one of a series of new initiatives from Education in Ireland. Education in Ireland provided student ambassadors with high level training on how best to harness effective online communication skills such as writing for blogs, film and audio for digital content and the use and impact of social media.
