A delegation of officials from the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Shanghai Committee, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and Shanghai University visited UCC recently, with welcome news announced for Cork and the wider region.

The delegation was invited to tour UCC and the UCC Confucius Institute (CI), before attending the opening of an exhibit of traditional Chinese paintings by undergraduate and graduate artists entitled ‘Modern but Classic’. The delegation also met with senior UCC personnel, including Dr Michael Murphy, President of UCC, Professor Paul Giller, Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs and staff of the UCC CI, including co-director Mr Yongbin Xia, as well as members of Cork City Council, to discuss further strengthening the already close ties between Shanghai University and UCC.

A meeting at City Hall with the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Catherine Clancy, preceded the delegation’s visit to campus. Among the representatives from the CPPCC Shanghai Committee was Chairman Mr. Wu Zhiming, also attending as the representative of the Mayor of Shanghai, who held discussions with the Lord Mayor on how to further strengthen economic, educational and other exchanges between the cities, which have been twinned since 2005. Amongst the agreements reached between the delegation and Cork City Council was the decision to prepare a new Memorandum of Understanding in 2014, and a commitment by all parties towards the continued support, in co-operation with ShanghaiUniversity and UCC, around the development of a Chinese Cultural Centre andGarden that will accommodate the Confucius Institute, promote Chinese language and culture to the public and further build on the existing ties between Shanghai and Cork. A commitment to strengthen business and trade links between Cork and Shanghai was also reached. The Shanghai University delegation was led by Prof. Lu Xionggang.

The exhibition ‘Modern but Classic’ is the result of a joint collaboration between the Jennings Gallery UCC, the UCC Confucius Institute and the Chinese Painting Department, College of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. The Chinese Painting Departing is the first department of its kind to be established by China’s Higher Education of Fine Arts and has produced many of the renowned artists in today’s Chinese painting community. The 30 works of art include Chinese landscape (shan shui) and flower-and-bird (huaniao) paintings, figures, Chinese calligraphy and seal cutting and water ink paintings. The exhibition runs until Wednesday 6 November 2013 and is based in the Jennings Gallery, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC.

The delegation also enjoyed a dance and music performance by Chinese teachers while in UCC.
