Renowned conductor to give lecture

One of the world’s busiest conductors is taking time out to visit Cork and give a lecture at UCC this evening (Monday 16 December)Carl Davis CBE.

A conductor with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Carl Davis is a leading composer of music for film, television, theatre and ballet. He will present a free illustrated talk on his work in the Film Studies auditorium, Windle Building, Main campus, UCC at 6pm today, Monday 16 December.

Film and Screen Media, the School of English and the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, UCC invited Carl Davis to UCC in association with the Cork Screen Commission.

Davis is well known for the music he has composed for many silent film restorations, including the Charlie Chaplin Mutuals; Abel Gance’s epic 1927 film, Napoleon; Hollywood, the 13-part series on American silent films produced by Kevin Brownlow and David Gill; the 1925 versions of Ben Hur and The Phantom of the Opera; and MGM’s greatest silent-era hits, Flesh and the Devil (1926, featuring Greta Garbo) and The Big Parade (1925).

Davis won a BAFTA for his music for The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981) and also composed scores for such contemporary films as Scandal (1989), The Trial (1993) and the Irish-set Widow’s Peak (1994). His work for television has been extensive: from music for Jeremy Isaacs’ groundbreaking documentary, The World at War (1973-4), to work on television films and mini-series such The Naked Civil Servant (1975); The Far Pavilions (1984); Pride and Prejudice (1995), Cranford (2007), and Upstairs Downstairs (2010).

With Paul McCartney, Davis composed the “Liverpool Oratorio” in 1991, and has also written music for a wide range of contemporary theatre and ballet.
